DIVORCING PEOPLE IN NEW YORK CAN NOW SEE THEIR OWN DIVORCE PAPERS ON THEIR PHONES AND COMPUTERS — NO LAWYER REQUIRED TO HELP THEM GAIN ACCESS TO THEIR FILES
You might not know that I’ve been helping women and vulnerable individuals to obtain an equal playing field in the courts for about 30 years. One of the problems I have found through the years is that divorcing people in New York, like many other places, have had no easy way of seeing their divorce papers to know what was going on in their divorce cases. That has now changed:
There’s a brand-new, easier way for people in divorce in New York to see their divorce papers. They don’t have to go to the courthouse or their lawyer’s office anymore. Now they can view their divorce papers on their phones or on their computers — from their own homes. (This applies to people in post-divorce cases too — like modification of child support cases, for example. )
All that needs to be done is to fill out a simple piece of paper and sign up for free. And a lawyer is NOT REQUIRED to help the people get the Registration Affidavit or to help them sign up.
I feel so strongly about this issue — that women need to know what is going on in their own divorce proceedings — that I am providing the free sign-up Registration Affidavit for free, on my website: karenwinner.com
Women need to be able to see their own divorce files. Sometimes divorce lawyers don’t tell women everything about what’s going on in their cases, and the women feel lost and confused for good reason. I want to help women avoid what happened to “Sarah” (name changed). Sarah contacted me one day to say she tried to find out what was going on in her divorce case from her lawyer, but he refused to tell her. All he would do is talk about his European vacation, she said. I said, “Sarah, go to the court house, find your file and look at it on your own, and I will explain it to you.”
In her papers, Sarah found a fake paper buried in her divorce file, that was a big bad surprise. This fake paper tricked the judge into believing that Sarah voluntarily consented to pay her millionaire husband child support, even though she did not work — which was her and her husband’s plan. Sarah did not know about this fake paper because her lawyer did not tell her. If she had had access to her own papers, she could have taken measures to prevent the fake paper from ever being used against her.
If anyone in any state including New York needs help to know what is going on in their divorce cases, I can help. I am offering Legal Explainer sessions at a discounted rate: see karenwinner.com for information.
